Madurai airport to be international soon

The Madurai is soon going to be an international airport, with the proposal of Mihin Lanka Airlines, coming forward to fly its direct flight between Madurai and Colombo from September 1. The low-cost Sri Lanka-based airlines has applied to the Airports Authority of India seeking slot clearance for operating its thrice-a-week flight service.

Green Signal for Kochi Metro Rail

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday has finally approved the Kochi Metro Rail Project, which was long pending and is one of the largest social infrastructure projects in Kerala. The Rs.5,128-crore project will be completed in three years, and is based on the Chennai model.

Election for vice president to be held on August 7

The Election Commission announced on Tuesday, that if required, the vice-presidential election will be held on August 7. The term of incumbent Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, who is the 12th Vice-President and also the Rajya Sabha Chairman, ends on August 10.

SC prohibits any commercial or tourism activity in Jarawa Reserve

In order to protect the indigenuos people, the Supreme Court has banned all commercial and tourism activities within a five-km radius of the Jarawa Tribal Reserve on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. A Bench of Justices G. S. Singhvi and S. J. Mukhopadhaya on Monday upheld an October 30, 2007 notification declaring an area up to a five-km radius of the Reserve a ‘Buffer Zone’ and prohibiting entry of any person other than a member of the aboriginal tribe into it.
