What is a descriptive grammar?

Descriptive grammar is the type of grammar which is based on the analysis of a body of carefully selected, spoken and written texts.

And it leads to a set of statements which describe how language actually works rather than how the writer thinks it should.

It is commonly contrasted with Prescriptive Grammar.
