September 15 is celebrated every year as the Engineer’s Day in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861-1962):
He served as the Dewan of Mysore and is considered to be the architect of the all-round development of Karnataka. Some of his most successful projects are the K.R.Sagar Dam, Brindavan Gardens, founding of the Bank of Mysore, turn-around of the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works and setting up of the Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory.
He was an internationally recognized genius who has done commendable work in harnessing water resources, successful design and construction of several river dams, bridges, implementing drinking water schemes and irrigation all over India.
He has also been awarded the Bharat Ratna for his dedicated services to the nation.
48th Engineers Day 2015:
The Institution of Engineers, India has selected a contemporary theme for this Engineers Day celebrations. “Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era” as a theme will address the aspects of new challgenges being faced in technology, nurturing of entrepreneurship and succeeding in making world class products.
